Surface Preparation Before Epoxy Application

An epoxy floor depends on its bond to the concrete below it. A coating may fail even when the resin is suitable if the slab is weak, damp beyond the system's limits or covered with dust, curing compound, oil or an old incompatible coating. Start with a survey of the existing surface and the manufacturer's requirements for the selected build-up.

Identify unsound concrete, laitance, cracks, joints and contaminants before deciding how to prepare the slab. Select a mechanical preparation method that produces the profile required for the specific primer and coating. Remove all resulting dust and debris. There is no single surface profile or preparation machine that suits every epoxy system and substrate.

Check slab moisture and any moisture-vapor concerns using the test method required by the project and coating manufacturer. Also check ambient and surface conditions during application, including the risk of condensation. A clean-looking slab is not proof that moisture conditions are acceptable, and a primer should not be assumed to solve a moisture problem without documented approval for that use.

Repair cracks, voids and damaged areas with materials compatible with the floor system, and detail movement joints rather than simply painting over them. Green Build Egypt lists UltraPoxy Primer as a low-viscosity epoxy primer before epoxy coatings, with UltraPoxy HP and UltraPoxy SL as distinct finish systems. Confirm the primer, repairs and finish coat are compatible and follow their mixing and recoat instructions.

Before full application, agree on inspection points for substrate soundness, cleanliness, moisture, profile and a representative test area when needed. Record the conditions and the products used. Good preparation gives the chosen epoxy system a fair chance to perform, but the final method must come from the current datasheets and project specification.
