Cementitious vs Acrylic Waterproofing: What to Compare

The terms cementitious and acrylic describe different ingredients, but they are not always mutually exclusive. Some cement-based waterproofing systems are modified with acrylic polymers. Compare the complete formulation, the intended substrate and the exposure instead of choosing from those two labels alone.

A cementitious coating is often considered for concrete or masonry where a bonded layer will be covered by another finish or used in a water-retaining application, subject to its datasheet. Green Build Egypt describes GProof as an acrylic-modified cementitious waterproofing system for mineral substrates; it is therefore an example of a hybrid rather than a purely cement-only coating. Its listed uses include basements and water tanks, but each proposed use still needs a system review.

An acrylic coating may be chosen for an exposed surface where weathering, color and movement are relevant. Green Build Egypt describes TexLastic as a single-component elastomeric acrylic coating for exposed concrete and weather protection. Its protective role against carbonation is different from assuming that any acrylic paint will resist permanent water pressure or immersion.

Before selecting either system, record whether the surface is above or below ground, exposed to UV, covered by tiles, subject to standing water, or in contact with drinking water. Check crack and joint movement separately. A coating's advertised flexibility does not eliminate the need to repair significant cracks and detail joints. Assess substrate moisture, preparation, compatible primers, specified thickness and curing for the exact product.

The decision is application-specific: a buried or water-retaining surface and an exposed façade have different demands. Compare the relevant product datasheets and approvals, including any potable-water requirement, then have the designer confirm the entire waterproofing build-up rather than treating one coating as a universal solution.
