Waterproofing

Waterproofing Solutions for Basements and Water Tanks

A basement keeps groundwater outside; a water tank keeps stored water inside. Both need a continuous water-resisting design, but the direction of pressure, access to the surface, joints and water quality requirements differ. Begin with the structure and its exposure rather than selecting a coating by product name alone.

For basements, identify the groundwater level, expected hydrostatic pressure, construction and movement joints, penetrations and the possibility of later access for repairs. Green Build Egypt lists BituProof S for underground concrete elements, including situations with elevated surrounding groundwater. Its product page and datasheet are starting points for a system review, not a replacement for detailing joints, terminations, protection during backfilling and drainage where specified.

For tanks, check whether the water is potable, used for fire protection or part of an industrial process. Green Build Egypt lists GProof and GProof ELA for water-retaining concrete applications. A listed use or a historical approval document should not be treated as a blanket current drinking-water certification. Obtain the current approval and suitability evidence required by the project authority for every material that will contact potable water.

Before coating, locate and repair defects that would interrupt the barrier: honeycombing, cracks, leaking joints and pipe penetrations. A plugging material such as GB AddiPlug addresses active leakage in concrete, but it is one repair step rather than a complete waterproofing design. Substrate preparation, compatible layers, application thickness and curing must follow the selected system's documentation.

Specify how the completed work will be inspected and tested before it is covered or the tank is commissioned. For water-retaining structures, agree on the tightness test, acceptance criteria and repair procedure with the design team. Choose the waterproofing system only after the substrate, water pressure, joint details and intended water use are documented.
